The small town of Solnhofen, located in the middle of the Altmuehl Valley Nature Park in southern Germany (Bavaria), is world famous and gives its name to the fossils found here. However, the term "Solnhofen limestone" also describes all other jurassic limestone deposits in the region in a broader sense.
In addition to the classic localities of Solnhofen and Eichstaett, there are many other localities, such as Painten. All of these localities differ in part considerably, which is why the term "Solnhofen of the regions" is often used today because each locality must be considered individually.
